I got a real kick out of this bit from a CNN article:

Now tell me, what problems do I share with Tony Stark?

I think they're referring more to things like womanizing, alcoholism, that sort of thing. Nobody has a deadly allergy to kryptonite, admittedly, but then people have written Superduperman stories where he starts feeling distanced from the very people he's trying to protect, and that's certainly something that many people have felt.
Other heroes: Batman - loss of parents at young age, tendency to distance himself from his closest friends and tries to bear burdens alone unnecessarily Hulk - anger control issues Spider-Man - same issues as any teenager. As an adult, problems with reconciling work (superhero) with family life
That's just a short list.

Ok, but the whole disconnect happens because these people react to their problems in a fundamentally different way than any person that has ever lived, i.e. they shoot lazers out of their eyes or sticky spider cum out of their wrists, or they turn green and put on purple shorts.

I saw the trailer for The Spirit the other day. Looks terrific.
Frank Miller is making some cool stuff these days.

Once again forcing the questions of what, if you really want to explore those issues, is the advantage is of burying it under all of the junk and ephemera of fantasy-land. It serves no purpose other than oversimplifying things so that those subjects are veneer thin for 13 year old boys to easily digest.

I see somebody has been enjoying themselves by editing posts.
Anyhow, "burying" the issues in fantastic stories is done because it's fun. Art should be fun, remember?
And the people involved don't "deal with" those issues by shooting lasers out of their eyes, etc., those are just examples of power on their part. They deal with (or avoid dealing with) their individual issues by means of power. In other words, either they accept their power to deal with their problems or else they use their personal power to distract themselves from their underlying problems.
And as for turning green, that's part of Bruce Banner's problem; his buried anger issues are able to physically manifest themselves in a fairly uncontrollable manner because of his power, so his anger problems cause harm to others at times.

Anyhow, burying the issues in fantastic stories is done because it's fun. Art should be fun, remember? The world is plenty fun without adding that bullshit. The poor boys who consume this trash are Separated ® from the real fun of life - women and wine - so they find their 'fun' in fantasy. On the creative side it's all about what you do with the cognitive surplus. If it's burnt up in the construction and exposition of the fantasy world and objects that populate it, it can't be applied to the meat of the subject in an equal portion. Simple. You're a fag.
