If you don't make enough money to support yourself living on your own it is time to get a non highschool job.

Like a job collecting disability checks from the government?

I would try and argue the point that paternity leave isn't a disability but considering how much kids stop you from doing I won't even bother.

I have gotten disability checks in the past but who hasn't. If a injury lasts more then five days you get paid disability then if it hits six months you go on long term disability. I have never collected LTD.
Also depending on your job you also get unemployment insurance while on paternity leave if you don't get enough money from your paternity leave. Say you made $1200 a week, paternity leave only gives you 70% of your pay unemployment will pay for up to six months to maintain your wage rate or up to $400 a week whichever is less.

I have gotten disability checks in the past but who hasn't. Myself and almost everyone I've ever met? I can name one person I've ever known that collects disability.

It is simple, you get hurt at work and after a week you get disability. You don't get it forever. I have been working for ten years and I collected 4 months of disability. I collected 3 months of it in one shot the other 20 days I collected at 4 different times.
BM if you got hurt at work and cant work for 2 weeks would you get paid? Your sick days in canada are usually paid out by an insurance company until you hit day 5. Then it is handed over to the government and it is paid out as disability.
It is to make it so people don't lose there houses over a car accident and don't have to do much work to get it. In every case that I got it it was automatically paid from the government to me with no effort on my part other then seeing a doctor who said I can't work for x number of days due to injury.

Yes, I'm eligible to collect disability if I hurt myself at work. I was under the impression that you had been collecting disability every damn week for the past 6 years or something. You actually have a job now? When did this happen?

Hell no! Disability doesn't pay enough. It does eventually run out over time because you either get retrained in a new job so they can stop paying you or you get nothing if you refuse it.
I have had a job a few months after I stopped being a bread man. I did use 13 months of paternity leave from roughly nov/december 2006 and I was activly working again from january this year until mid april and then was going to be on paternity leave again in july so I have done minimal work for the past 2 months since it would of been more of a hassle then me doing nothing.

13 months of paternity leave?

I get 18 weeks at 90% pay, then 37 weeks of 70% pay. It can start 4 weeks before the due date.
So its 55 weeks and not 13 months but close enough in my books. For the 37 weeks at 70% pay unemployment insurance will be giving me money to make up for the cash difference.

Canada is actually pretty good for kids and leave. You don't have to be paid for it but they can't fire you for taking a year off. Different employers offer different options. Some will actually pay you to come back early if you don't take your full year.
